In brave new world, technology is incredibly advanced, rendering our highest technology obsolete. These chapters of Brave New World discuss the cutting edge rocket technology. According to the novel, air crafts in the Brave New World travel
at a speed of "twelve-hundred and fifty kilometers an hour" (Huxley
146). This speed translates to about 777 miles per hour. In terms of
the speed of air crafts, the U.S. has the Brave New World beat. Our air crafts travel much faster than the rockets in the Brave New World.
However, the rockets in the Brave New World serve a more conventional
purpose than the air crafts in the U.S. The rockets in the Brave New World
can be compared to 747 airplanes in the U.S. The Brave New World air crafts transport people just like how 747 jet liners do in the U.S. So
while our air crafts are much faster, they do not share the same
conventional purposes as the rockets in the Brave New World.
As far as air crafts that can take people around the world, the Brave New World has us beat. "Ariel could put a girdle 'round the Earth in forty minutes" (Huxley 146). The Brave New World has the capability to take someone or something around the world in forty minutes which is an amazing feat. In the U.S. "if a rocket is launched from the surface of the Earth, it needs to reach a speed of at least 4.9 miles per second in order to reach space" (Redshift Line). While this is also an amazing feat, that rocket would not be able to go around the Earth in forty minutes. The U.S. does have the technology to make an air craft go around the Earth in forty minutes, but do we really need an air craft that goes that fast? It would cost millions of dollars and would take thousands of gallons of fossil fuels to create a rocket of that caliber. In this day and age we do not necessarily need a mode of transportation that goes that fast. Maybe in the future, but not now.
